In 2010, when I was in deep internal conflict, I asked my friend Manish Bhoj, who I fondly call Narayan (because he has all the answers; yes, all of them), to answer this question:
Why is the Hindi film industry producing so many crap movies?
And he answered in an instant, "Because Son, our people like mindless entertainment."
And then he left coz let's face it, answering everybody's questions is a busy job.
And today, after 3 years of pondering, I got it. Art imitates life. We are mindless.
As soon as we are born, we have to start studying (like before even we can talk), then do a bachelors in some subject because that's what our parents want, then get a job which we hate, then marry a person whom we don't love and then produce an offspring and make them follow the same path.
A life so directionless numbs our minds, hence we watch huge film stars in a theatre instead of great stories; examples of these film stars are many, if I name them, I'll get killed. But no one will kill me, if I denounce Lagaan or Swades because that's just a great story.
But being a hopeful person, I hope the storytellers keep on telling their stories because life imitates art too, Gandhigiri by Munnabhai, people leaving jobs they hated after watching 3 Idiots, people leaving Wasseypur after watching Gangs of Wasseypur.
Like 'Red' from the movie 'The Shawshank Redemption', I hope.
